Canon D30

I purchased a Canon D30 camera body in December 2001 when I started working for the newspaper.

The D30 was the first low priced digital SLR that used good lenses and gave a professional appearance. I got the entire system for $4500 and included a Canon 28-135mm and a 70-300mm Image Stabilized Zoom lens, a Sigma 17-35mm Zoom lens and a Canon 550ex flash.

The D30 had great reviews, based, I think upon the fact that it was new to the market and was unique. Up until then, digitial SLR's cost upwards of five thousand dollars. There were very few cameras I could afford so the D30 was it.

Picture quality of the Canon CMOS chip is very good, even at 3.25 megapixels. With some image processing, an 8x10 is easy and clean.  The CMOS chip gives great color and definition.

Pros:
Great value for the money if you want a digital SLR that uses Canon lenses.
Picture quality is very good.
Battery life is excellent.
"Feel" is very solid.
Uses Microdrive.

Cons:
Shutter lag is about a second.
Flash is inconsistent.
Low light focusing is bad.
