Return to Alaska Home Page

After staying up until 1:30am reading the 5th Harry Potter book, I slept in until 8 am. It is Perry's birthday and we're having dinner with Kent and Rachel.  I will spend the day working on the website and getting things in order for the rest of the trip.

We leave tomorrow for Barrow, the northern most point of the United States. It is above the Arctic Circle and it snowed there today.

At 8 am, it is finally Alaska weather... cold and rainy. We've waited all week for this. Really. You just don't understand what it's like to expect bad weather and get good weather when you're packed for bad weather.

Finally!

Breakfast at the Northern Light is always an experience. The food is good, unless you order fish. (They screw up fish as well as any restaurant in Petersburg can, except for Coastal Seafood and the Alaskafe.)

The service can range from great to horrible. "Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chance!"

At 9 am the tide is out and the water is down about 16 feet, allowing a herd of deer the chance to prance outside of the restaurant window.

The Harbor Sentinel sits atop his perch keeping the diners safe from attack.

At 1pm the tide is high and you can see where the ground outside the restaurant has disappeared.

At 9pm, the tide is low once again. The clouds are just as bright and it won't be dark for another hour and a half.

Perry gets his cake. The Petersburg Fire Department was called out to control the flame. Perry beat them to the punch by summoning up all his strength and blowing out the candles before they set the ceiling on fire. He gets a smooch from Maria. We think he got something more than that this morning since they didn't come out of their room until almost noon. He looked happy all day and gave us all presents.
