Nowell's Birthday Party
May 29, 2005

My birthday weekend was really great. My lovely wife was out of the country and my friends gathered to console me in my loneliness. Barry came down from Long Beach and the kids and a small collection of The Usual Suspects came to my party. Here are some photos.

(As usual, click on the little picture to see the big picture.)

The birthday group.

The pre-food food table.

Ashley in her soft cast.

The inside table.

The outside table.

From the night before.

Barry was a great help.

Joe is telling the truth. His lips are not moving.

Goldie and Herm brought the cake. Don't ask... they are supposed to be  balloons.

I get to cut the cake and scoop the cow pies.

Ashley hurt her finger.

It's all better now.

Alex also hurt his finger but it looks ok now, too.

I can't remember what the joke was but Hava didn't get it. She said, "Really?"

The room lost it. Everybody cracked up.

From the morning. Yes, it was 11:10am but the sun had set somewhere on the British Empire. A drink was in order.

"I've got to go home, PopPop. Happy Birthday." or words to that effect.

Monday Morning: The end of the weekend. After the heartfelt and tearful goodbyes, after forgetting the bananas, after hoping to leave in a squeal of tires and a cloud of dust... oops, the damn battery is dead.

Barry remembers the famous scene from the movie, The Longest Day, where Kenneth More is responsible for one of the greatest automotive repair scenes of all time:

Capt. Colin Maud: [walking up to a stalled vehicle] My old grandmother used to say anything mechanical, give it a good bashing.
[Hits hood with his swagger stick]
(Barry only has his foot. That will have to do.)
Capt. Colin Maud: Try it now.
[vehicle cranks]
Private Flanagan: [to Clough] Sure, now; that did it.
[notices Maud looks at him]
Private Flanagan: Ah, now that's what I call a hell of a man!
Pvt. Clough: Aye, I like his dog too.
Capt. Colin Maud: Move inland. The war's that way.

Barry comments on the previous photo caption.

As the man said:
"Ah, now that's what I call a hell of a man!"

The end of a great weekend. Thank you one and all.
