The Chester B

The MV Chester B... our home for a week. A fine, fine ship with an exceptional crew. Comfortable, sturdy, reliable, solid... the ship, not the crew... well, ok, the crew was, too!

Diana and crew

Diana with Capt. Kent, Rachel and Buck. You figure out who is whom. Each one a friend, each one a character. Takes one to know one!

This really deserves its own page but for now, imagine that Perry is either looking for a lost contact lens in the grass, searching for meadow salmon, or stalking a bear. You pick.

The halibut that Nowell dropped a 10 lb. sinker on. Poor thing just got confused and bit the hook. Of course, Nowell's story is that he is a great fisherman.

You decide.

Now imagine that you are whatever Perry is stalking. If you have a great imagination, imagine that you're pissed at Perry.

Perry and Maria are searching for different things. What do you suppose he is looking for?

I think he lost his pocket knife.

Now imagine that this is what is on the other end of the lens and that it thinks that Perry is food. Now imagine what your underwear feels like.

Meals on the Chester B depended upon what we caught that day. This day we caught 331 shrimp in pots like these. Nowell coiled the rope in the bucket. An essential job he did flawlessly... or so he says.

This is what a dinner table looks like on the Chester B after Rachel Barth gets done with it. If you need a program to identify the players in the photo then perhaps you shouldn't be visiting this site.

(Nowell is behind the camera.)

Even though half the people in this picture had absolutely nothing to do with catching and preparing shrimp, they are all shipmates and therefore must get in the photo.

If you were a bird and could fly really, really high, this is what Petersburg Alaska would look like. Of course you wouldn't have the wing of a DeHavilland Beaver in your view.

This is what 331 shrimp look like before becoming food. You don't want to know what you have to do to make them food.

O.K., so you do. Here is what we do...

These are the boat people. They stopped us to pick up some aspirin and a lighter. Serious nicotine withdrawal I suspect.

People are really nice out here.

WE RIP THEY'RE LITTLE HEADS OFF, OK?

IT IS A DISGUSTING JOB BUT SOMEBODY HAS TO DO IT, OK?

IT REALLY, REALLY SUCKS... OK?

And you always thought that ice comes from your freezer. In Alaska, it comes from glaciers. It tastes good, too. However, you have to take a long, cold boat ride to pick it up.

It's worth it.
